HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON JUDICIARY REP. KELLY A BREEN CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, June 5, 2024 10:30 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Committee on Judiciary was called to order by Chair Breen. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Breen, Tyrone Carter, Hope, Dievendorf, Hoskins, Tsernoglou, Fink, Wendzel, Wozniak, Outman, Johnsen. Absent: Reps. Edwards, Arbit. Excused: Reps. Edwards, Arbit. Representative Tyrone Carter moved to adopt the meeting minutes from May 22, 2024. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 5110 before the committee: HB 5110 (Rep. Wozniak) An act to allow certain fiduciaries to convert income trusts to unitrusts, convert express unitrusts to income trusts, and change the percentage or method used to calculate unitrust amounts. The following person submitted a card with a neutral position on HB 5110, but did not wish to speak: Ashley Steffen, representing the Michigan Department of Attorney General. Representative Hope moved to report out HB 5110 with recommendation. The motion prevailed 11-0-0: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. Breen, Tyrone Carter, Hope, Dievendorf, Hoskins, Tsernoglou, Fink, Wendzel, Wozniak, Outman, Johnsen. Nays: None. Pass: None. The Chair laid HB 5724 before the committee: HB 5724 (Rep. Breen) A bill to protect the safety of judges and certain other individuals; to protect certain information of judges and certain other individuals from disclosure; to provide for the powers and duties of certain state and local governmental officers and certain other people and entities; and to provide remedies. Chair Breen testified in support of HB 5724. Judge David McKeague, representing the U.S. Court of Appeals - Sixth Circuit, testified in support of HB 5724. Judge Esther Salas, representing the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, testified in support of HB 5724. Questions and discussion followed. Chief Justice Elizabeth Clement, representing the Michigan Supreme Court, testified in support of HB 5724. Questions and discussion followed.
