- Edwards McFall In The Chair: Smit The House agreed to the title of the bill. Rep. Posthumus moved that the bill be given immediate effect. The motion prevailed, 2/3 of the members serving voting therefor. Rep. Xiong, having reserved the right to explain her protest against the passage of the bill, made the following statement: “Mr. Speaker and members of the House: Michigan families are already struggling with rising gas prices, inflation, and the high cost of living. This bill doubles the state gas tax, increasing it from 26.3 cents per gallon to 51 cents per gallon —a direct hit to the wallets of working families, small businesses, and everyday commuters. While I fully support investing in our roads and infrastructure, we must do so in a way that does not place an unfair burden on those who can least afford it. This tax hike will disproportionately impact low- and middle-income Michiganders, rural residents who rely on driving, and those with long commutes for work. The majority party often says they are against raising taxes, yet this bill does just that. Instead of doubling the gas tax, we should explore more responsible, balanced solutions to fund road repairs —solutions that do not punish hardworking residents at the pump. For these reasons, I cannot support HB 4183. I remain committed to fighting for fiscally responsible policies that protect Michigan families from unnecessary financial strain.” House Bill No. 4184, entitled A bill to amend 1945 PA 327, entitled “Aeronautics code of the state of Michigan,” by amending sections 34 and 203 (MCL 259.34 and 259.203), section 34 as amended by 2015 PA 259 and section 203 as amended by 2015 PA 260.
