HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS REP. MIKE MUELLER CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Thursday, May 5, 2022 9:00 AM Room 308, House Office Building The House Committee on Government Operations was called to order by Chair Mueller. At 9:01 AM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 9:10 AM, Majority Vice Chair VanWoerkom called the committee back to order. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Mueller, VanWoerkom, Hauck, Cherry, Rabhi. Absent: None. Excused: None. Representative Cherry moved to adopt the meeting minutes from March 17, 2022. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 6042 before the committee: HB 6042 (Rep. Mueller) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 1308 (MCL 380.1308), as amended by 2016 PA 363. Chairman Mueller and Joe Hanson, representing the Critical Response Group, testified in support of his bill. Questions and discussion followed. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 6042, but did not wish to speak: Matt Saxton, representing the Michigan Sheriffs' Association. Stephanie Johnson, representing the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police. Sgt. Travis Fletcher, representing the Michigan State Police. Jim Williams, representing the Michigan Fire Inspectors Society. Matt Sahr, representing the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union. At 9:34 AM, Majority Vice Chair VanWoerkom laid the committee at ease. At 9:35 AM, the Chair called the committee back to order. The Chair laid HB 5244 before the committee: HB 5244 (Rep. Fink) A bill to repeal 2020 PA 238, entitled "An act to prohibit an employer from taking certain actions against an employee who does not report to work under certain circumstances related to COVID-19; to prohibit an employee from reporting to work under certain circumstances related to COVID-19; to prohibit discrimination and retaliation for engaging in certain activities; and to provide remedies," (MCL 419.401 to 419.413). Representative Fink testified in support of his legislation. Questions and discussion followed. Wendy Block, representing the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, testified in support of HB 5244. Questions and discussion followed. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 5244, but did not wish to speak: Amanda Fisher, representing the National Federation of Independent Businesses. Dave Worthams, representing the Michigan Manufactures Association. The following people submitted a card in opposition to HB 5244, but did not wish to speak: Bill Flory, representing the Michigan Association for Justice. There being no further business before the committee, Chair Mueller adjourned the meeting at 9:58 AM.
